I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for my first ever Five for Friday. I'm trying to forget today is Friday because the more Fridays I see, the more I remember that summer is winding down. >>Insert pity party here>>
I finally broke down and ordered an Erin Condren Teacher Planner for this year. I don't know why I waited so long. Isn't it lovely? We lost our sweet little mouse this week. RIP Mickey...you will be missed. I never thought in a million years a rodent would share my house, by my choice. We are all sad. We had a nice little burial ceremony for him.

I've been absolutely terrible about updating this pitiful blog. My hope it to keep it somewhat updated over the summer when I have a little more time to do that. If I can tear myself away from binge watching all the shows I lose track of during the school year. So let's do a quick recap, shall we?

I purchased a new "Reading Cove" for our classroom. We all loved it! It was so popular that we had to take turns choosing whose day it was to sit in the cove. It has bookshelves on each end, as well. It is one of my favorite things in our room now!

Our Mothers' Day gifts this year. The clay birds were made in Art, so I can't take credit for those. Cute potholders (purchased two for $1 at The Dollar Tree) with handprint and date. A cute poem I downloaded (whoever you are, you are awesome), added their fingerprints, and stuck a magnet on the back. Easy peasy!

Until next time...
Long time no see! I'm going to try to update this pitiful blog at least once a week. That is my goal, at least.
I wish I could say that I have been super productive over Christmas break, but sadly I haven't. I haven't really thought about school other than pinning a few items. That counts, right?

Every year my class always volunteers to make ornaments to decorate the Christmas trees on the navy base near our school. It is hard for kindergarteners to part with their ornaments, so I always have them make two of the same ornament (one for home and one for the base). We made popsicle trees this year. I just hot glue the popsicle sticks together. The students use green Sharpies to color the tree shape. They glue sequins and tree trunks to the tree shape and that's it. I usually add a ribbon hanger to the top.

I took the last few days off before Christmas break began to go to Disney World with my family. I knew if we waited until official break began, it would be too crowded. Don't feel too sorry for my class, though. We had our Christmas party a little early, and I left them in the hands of an awesome substitute teacher. They actually decorated Icing Christmas Trees and had a Polar Express Party while I was gone.

It was quite an endeavor planning for the time off, but I felt much better leaving everything nice and organized for her.
 Fun with the White Rabbit

For now, I'm just enjoying the last three days before I have to return to work. My children return on Tuesday, so I'm hoping to get a lot accomplished on Monday. Here's hoping I'm not in meetings all day!

Until next time!
I've been teaching in a teeny tiny room for the last three years. My room was originally built as a "Resource Room" and the only good thing I can say about it was the office had plenty of storage, but the actual room was the size of a closet. Out in blogland, I'm always surprised when I see pictures of other teachers' rooms and they call their rooms tiny. I would happily trade them for their "tiny" rooms.

This past year, I was lucky enough to utilize the resource room across the hall for literacy and free centers. The two rooms together actually equal the size of a normal classroom. Though it was much better, it is nice to finally graduate to a full size classroom, and have all my stuff in one space.

Last week, I set about the task of moving. I can't believe I had so much stuff. I'm super excited about my new LARGE classroom and the fact that I get to share an office with my teaching buddy! We taught across the hall from each other for two years before she moved into a large room last year.

So this week, pray for me. I'm going in...
My task is to get everything in its place before kindergarten screenings on August 9th and 10th. Sounds doable, right? Except I have a workshop on the 7th and 8th. I better get busy!!!
I have the Royal Reading & Writing Center from Really Good Stuff in my classroom. This thing has it all: magnetic dry erase board, storage tubs, pencil/marker storage, removable dry erase board with lines, and big book storage in the middle. I love it because it is on wheels, can be placed where I need it, and moved out of the way when I don't.

Elapsed Time Timer

I love this timer and so do my students. They are able to tell how much time is left with a quick glance. I prop it on my chalk tray, but it has a stand and a hanger on the back. One more thing I love about it, it doesn't scare the mess out of us when it goes off. It's loud enough for the kids to hear without being frightening.

Now that I have a personal laminator, I wonder how I ever survived without it? If you don't have one, you should get one. You can thank me later. ;)

I use these to store each child's extra supplies. I inherited these cubbies with my classroom. This is an old picture, I have since added black number stickers to each plastic box. I like them much better now.

I'm back! Wow, I feel rested after a year long vacation! Technically not quite a year, but who is counting? My summer is coming to a close, and I'm trying not to count how many days left I have of sleeping in until ten...I mean waking up at seven (Wink, Wink).
In honor of my first post back and my last post before I dropped off the blogosphere, I find it only fitting to have another VistaPrint update.
Here's what I ordered for the upcoming school year. I'm making a change from pirates to owls as you'll see evidenced below:

Now that summer has begun, and I've taken a few days to decompress, I'm ready to start thinking about next year. Who am I kidding? I've been blog stalking and gathering ideas since the afternoon school let out. ;)

Our last month of school was a whirlwind of activity with a fabulous retirement party we threw for one of my kindergarten friends, end of the year program, other school programs, water day, butterfly releases, and too much more to even talk about. The time really did fly by.

I've been thinking alot about my classroom theme. For a few years, my classroom theme has been frogs. Last year, I incorporated some cute birds, squirrels, and other forest animals for a "forest" theme. I'm thinking of adding some more bugs for a garden theme this coming year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN3hBMc736QmfbylFLbvlYAbjH9RtsGrbhPSE6H-g6nrkxUCFkmcTkJ1wrScBMHY1angIHralkhM_DAKQq1fjgjaWgl9kszojFJsyIa5r4ciUrgq1cV3nZ17UpuLr2N27-H2phoIjVfmc/s400/Bee+pinata.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621431608178298994" />

source

How cute would this bee pinata be hanging over the classroom library? It would really be darling hanging from a cute paper tree! I'm trying not to give the fire martial a heart attack, though.

On another note, I've finally discovered the goodness that is Pinterest. Follow me, I'd love to see what other teachers are pinning!

Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00147867330475091574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1489246009537632651.post-36789783759903681922011-03-26T07:53:00.001-07:002011-03-26T08:26:48.682-07:00Writing Prompts<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 256px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO6kslih8WptjhoNZRIEc4FB8G7vrYrzgYZDmZMxGMFxjMr4zoks2ADDcjemEdmte7KtcOx4QrOgOGidRv7RbsW4cHBymxL5Rfk5UXK2JqurZU3yzwzA1ncYI_PzKwH-AEVfZMs8D8o_4/s400/Journal+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588409552599353586" />
Ever wonder, "What am I going to do with all these old stickers. Who is ever going to want a sticker of a hot dog?" This one is so simple, but it's a "Why didn't I think of that before" facepalm. My students are expected to write one sentence to address the prompt. Reaching for the moon, we are all writing 3-4 sentences, and it's only March. I'm so proud of my little writers! They are already pretty sure they won't like radishes, even with Ranch dressing!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 326px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx5rSfUyLT4NbiLskS0w7b24gezY3Iw9N8UUUu93GnwrSGKOtjyoEA1kX_ieQmw_d_efJfz3UkmOaE4DB7w49kNcMQ625_OSNIUrN3Kq-8XJCR5WQuQut91dULvgsJJN5AY9wvmvn1vlI/s400/P3170932.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585209894746053138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 399px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6TkAMgJUTugCXMqLn_v3Ev0vzidi7WaZCdOFUBJP1WsQcAt9ItgFxXzSWnCNB1AQIXRIv8Q-0hLxNvkBhi8pY9k8frEeBbYstMw8iYeafIpwraFhDvVsuN1kQGBZIp7tAI-LZfZOtGkg/s400/P3170933.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585209890624413826" />
Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00147867330475091574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1489246009537632651.post-40549493735334386672011-03-16T18:57:00.000-07:002011-03-16T19:19:48.028-07:00Does anyone else feel like the time until the end of the school year is just flying by? Anyone?

Bueller?

Seriously though, I think it's the fact that so much is packed into the last few months of school. I love staying busy and I really love this time of the year with my kindergarteners. We are a little family. We "get each other." Know what I mean?

I have leprechaun trap pictures to post. Maybe tomorrow. Tonight is filled with American Idol and Survivor!
Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00147867330475091574noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1489246009537632651.post-49308562777819854602011-03-16T11:15:00.000-07:002011-03-16T11:15:01.168-07:00Paper Plate Leprechauns<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 289px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixkonnA4O7rO-zcgQb7P8DegE-5fNMSzTbqsJZ2qsXp8-ohHQQF9mg0HU-EhS59f6mLhF3_ZaRd8Zmyd6vIzsaL83V_5A1qY7i7zcZSBLb87b0NYP4s2GGXChO_j4kJS5emVAnSvNPjaQ/s400/P3140902.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584095070425250722" />

We made these adorable leprechauns for our hallway bulletin board. I'm not exagerrating, it's really tiny. I'm going to have to measure it one day, but I'm a little scared to see the actual digits.

Everyone is familiar with the "clip" behavior system. As with anything, I have to take a great idea and modify it to fit my needs and up the cuteness factor a little, Yes, it is posted on the back door of my classroom. I cut the tree trunk out of plain brown construction paper. The parts of the tree are just pieces of circular scrapbook paper.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XNWoxktf8pqsPOL8g3WwfKRAK6282Ll6gHUFH6qU7bkCwd9HAx-aeimWMY016N1BtrihbrzEeQbzi_lnyOK_hEqeSP0T0jSEt0SHARQSpCDA2k8yO9n0OkoL-OO6Uv-6Mkiu6kTij9g/s400/Individual+Behavior+Mgmt.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584090643273850322" />

The wooden squirrels were purchased at Michael's. I had to travel to three different Michael's this past summer to get the number I needed. The squirrels are a seasonal item from Summer 2010. I just hot glued a magnet on the back of each. The yellow and red signs are car magnets that I made at VistaPrint.

Another handy tip-I wanted to be able to reuse the squirrels if I tired of them on my behavior chart. I used my label maker with the clear label tape to add my students' names to each squirrel.
Christyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00147867330475091574noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1489246009537632651.post-36776440731716631462011-03-14T14:51:00.000-07:002018-01-02T18:06:17.312-08:00Small Group Behavior ManagementDoes anyone else have talkative groups during literacy centers? I do not mind at all if my students whisper, but my room is so small that I wouldn't be able to hear the students at my group reading if everyone else was talking in his/her normal speaking voice. This year I have quite the chatty group! All it takes is one to start talking and the rest follow suit.

I've devised a new plan of action that kind of goes along with the "Mystery Person" I've read about out in blogland. I have been using this small magnetic white board that is divided into fourths. One section is for each of my groups.

Every group starts with all four of their colors. If a group is too loud (after one warning) the group will lose their blue magnet. If more than one reminder, they may lose their green, then yellow, etc. Each magnet missing is minutes off of recess or free centers for the day for those group members.

Today, I decided to up the ante. I took four index cards and wrote 1, 2, 3, or 4 on each and folded them in half. Before we started work stations, I explained our new system. I will choose an index card without looking, and place it in the envelope. After work stations are over, I will reveal the "Mystery Group." If the group did not lose their blue during work station time, we all will get five minutes of extra recess or free centers.

The beauty of this is that the students keep each other in check. Also, they have no idea how long you actually planned on staying out at recess, so five extra minutes seems like gold to them. It's a win/win situation.
